I remember when my mom turned forty. We hung black streamers, donned black party hats, and pronounced her ‘over the hill’. She was so old. On November 4, I will cross that same hill and become one of the ancients. I’m weirdly excited about the whole thing.
Thank you so much for this! I’m a geriatrician who’s been in love with my elderly patients for decades, and I have been fighting against ageism about as long. Old people are generally the coolest people around! This weekend I’m turning 50, a milestone that I was hoping to celebrate as entering my second half century. Now I’m not so hopeful that I’ll have that much time, nor do I know what I would do with it, since it appears that I have involuntarily retired. Your posts help so much as I contemplate my future and get through my present.
